You place a signal, install a suitable device connected to central, and make sure that both the windows and the door of the house are of good quality. Very good! But what about security locks?
Thieves are aware that even in the most protected homes, those with top-quality armored doors, the lock mentioned above is an interesting gap through which they can act.
The Police have indeed been warning for a few years about the growth of robberies with techniques that avoid having to force the lock (bumping, imprisoning, etc.), but that does not mean that this component is no longer critical for home security.
That is why in this article, we want to tell you everything you need to know about security locks for doors, from the classes that exist to the fundamentals to change them and thus prevent them from stealing from you. So turn the key and read on.
Door lock parts: how do they work?
As you already know, the door lock is a metallic security mechanism that prevents it from being opened, thanks to the unique and non-transferable encryption stamped on the key. Of course, the 19th century would have been that easy to explain, but today there are dozens of different types.
It is entirely normal for you to have doubts about changing the lock at home for the first time. And no, even if you see it as something peculiar, it is usually very recurrent in removals, thefts, or cases of occupation. Why?
Well! It involves the restoration of the security breach. Replacing the lock protects a door that did not have it or lost it due to any of these cases. It is an affordable and concrete solution.
But of course, to choose a door lock well beforehand, it is vital to have a minimum knowledge of how it works. So we are not going to get into heavy theory, but we will do a brief review:
- Bowler or cylinder:
It is a metal component through which the key is inserted to open the lock. This part is known as a keyhole when it is not present—and there is a hole.
- Latch – Also known as a latch, keeps the door closed when the key is unlocked. It achieves this thanks to its wedge-shaped face with which it slides through the strike plate until its other straight front blocks it.
- Security bolt or bit: these are the physical elements that block the door when you lock it. Turning it, they come out, fitting into the door’s striker plate. When opened, they retract, preventing blockage. Depending on the type of lock, you will have more or less.
- Strike a metal part that is installed on the inner face of the door frame. These are the holes in which the bolts are housed when we put the key.
- Nut: square hole through which the metal rod (square) is inserted to fit the handle. When we lower the latter, the follower rotates, activating the latch.
- A knob or handle:
It is the most visible part of the lock in the form of a lever or stump that activates the entire mechanism when lowered or turned.
- Shield: a metal plate that surrounds the bowler and reinforces all the security of that component.
Types of door locks
They will all look identical from the outside, but you will find different security locks for doors with very other functions depending on the type. And, of course, that also influences the level of security provided and the price of materials and the installation.
1. Recessed lock
They are the most common in homes and offer a more significant security benefit at a quality-price level.
Depending on the level of security, they can have one or more locks, an additional lock or lock, or even an anti-panic mechanism (it opens from the inside with a turn button instead of a key).
2. Surface lock
Therefore, they depend on the quality of the manufacturing material to resist.
Ah! But they come in handy if you want to reinforce a door without having to modify it much.
- Multi-Lock:the latch has more than one side bolt (usually odd numbers).
Multipoint – A bar goes through the lock and runs through the door from top to bottom. This type of lock allows several closing points and are currently the safest on the market (if we do not get into electronic issues).
4. Tube lock
At the level of daily privacy, it turns out to be the most practical and interesting mechanism.
So to protect the storage room, the garage, an office with confidential devices or documents, the application of the tubular lock is almost infinite. And best of all, it has improved a lot in terms of security in recent years.
5. Mortise lock
It is the door lock that was used in the past for almost all types of homes. Unfortunately, it is currently incomplete disuse due to the null level of protection and security it offers. If you have trouble recognizing it, it is the one that requires a key with giant pins.
A thief will disassemble it in minutes, and you will not be able to make an insurance claim due to the absence of damage to the door.
6. Electronic or digital lock
Yes, it is typical of a hotel room. It is the only type of door lock that does not work with conventional mechanical parts. Instead, it opts for different technological security systems. More reliable? Yes, but also exposed to cyber-attacks.
You can find in the market locks with a retina scanner fingerprint reader linked to mobile phones with a card or numerical code. So all of them are invulnerable to the lever technique.
7. Invisible lock
What if, instead of using a bowler hat, we eliminated it? The invisible lock offers a still scarce door lock model, which provides a very high level of security. Sure, but they are expensive and complicated to maintain at the same time.
Instead of a key, it works with some small battery remote control.
Are you thinking of changing a door lock? Although it is a viable operation with the right tools, we recommend that you go to a professional; the result will be of higher quality and incomparable guarantees.
